Other than bringing a cake and a few balloons, the staff at the theater did everything. Easy peasy.
For her actual birthday, Trenton and I decided to surprise her with the opportunity to pick out her very own American Girl Doll, which is something she had wanted since she was a toddler. All we told her was that we were going to the American Girl store, and maybe she could get a new hairstyle on the doll her cousin Hannah had given her. We showed up and surprised her...I was even recording the moment in hopes that she'd be super excited and jump up and down or something to that effect. But to our surprise, she didn't react that way at all. She was very gracious and made sure we knew how much she appreciated our offer, but she asked instead if she could just pick out an outfit and get a hairstyle for the doll she had been given. When I asked her why she made that decision, she said, "I know these are super expensive, and it's only a week until Christmas. You guys don't need to spend that kind of money." Trenton and I almost started crying right there in the store. After gathering what was left of our melted hearts, Trenton and I guided her toward the doll hair salon where she got to pick out any hairstyle she wanted. Emma was in heaven. We celebrated her birthday at The Cheesecake Factory and then stayed in a hotel in Denver so that we could visit the Natural Science Museum and eat at Casa Bonita the next day. A substantial snowstorm blew in that night, and it was so cozy to wake up the next morning to a perfect wintry scene just one week before Christmas.
While we were at the Nature and Science museum, we got to do an experiment where we scraped the inside of our cheeks and looked at the our mouth cells under a microscope.
